Buzztail Ridge

We moved from New York to San Jose in October, 1979, following a Switzerland assignment. We had no idea San Jose would be our home for nearly 25 years! With the departure of our youngest son Ryan, who moved to San Francisco, we were sure now was the time for a new home. We considered everything from beach to desert, Iraq to Austrailia, but in the end we decided to move close to our eldest son, Jim, who moved to Chico last summer.

We had trouble telling a real estate agent what we wanted, other than a unique property, and we assured them we would know it when we saw it. During the first day of looking, we found a house we could easily live with, but we wanted to keep looking. On the second day, our agent showed us a property that was no longer on the market. She convinced the owners it was worth showing it once more.

We saw it, and just as we had said, we knew immediately this was our new home.

Getting there requires transversing a 4.5 mile private road. You first go down, cross Little Chico Creek, and then climb again, revealing some spectacular views.

This is the first view of the house. It's built on the top of the ridge, on 9.08 acres of relatively flat land.

The driveway is flat and wide, leading to a spacious three-car garage. Jim has allocated the spaces to the Jag, the Pathfinder, and, of course, the trailer. Jacquie pictures a future playroom for the grandkids.

Most of the property has been left natural, but the front yard has very interestinglandscaping with many native plants and something beautiful always in bloom.

There is a pleasant walkway that leads to the frontdoor.

Walking around the left side of the house reveals spectacular views of the valley, ridges, and ...

... even snow-capped mountains.

From here, the back patio is entered through a vine-covered arch, ...

... revealing another set of spectacular views, including an expansive view of the sunset every evening.

Including a distant view of our barn.

You can enter the back of the house from either the kitchen or master bedroom, which look out on the view.

The back patio, on four levels, is dominated by both a pool and separate jacuzzi.

The living room features an operable wood stove which is used to provide most of the heating of the house.

The master bedroom has French doors which open to the back patio and fantastic views.

The master bath has both a shower (for Jim) and a bath, with outside views (for Jacquie).

This is the view of the house from the barn.

This is the barn.

What can I say? These are our goats--Mary Lou and Cocoa!
